Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President, serving from 1861 – 1865, was one of America's great leaders, Lincoln demonstrating uncommon courage during the Civil War, one of the greatest crises in our Nation’s history. His life is commemorated in music, poetry and sculpture; his words are quoted by poets and politicians; and his face appears on coins such as 2009 Lincoln Dollars both 2009 Uncirculated Lincoln Silver Dollar and on 2009 Proof Lincoln Silver Dollar, as well as on currency and postage stamps. Mountains, cities, highways and schools throughout the country bear his name.

The year 2009 marks the bicentennial anniversary of Lincoln's birth. Public Law 109-285, the "Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Coin Act," signed into law on September 27, 2006, requires the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue $1 silver coins in commemoration of this milestone anniversary.
